General 2 — Deep River Fire Department

In times of emergency the Deep River Fire Department is ready to respond. During this emergency response you may find yourself in a position to help before first responders arrive, or to lend assistance. Below are some simple but important ABS’s to know and practice.

Make sure everyone in your home knows how to call 911 and give the dispatcher the address.

Make sure first responders can see your house number from the road.

Know how to treat burns.

Treat a burn right away by putting it in cool water for 3 to 5 minutes.
Cover with a clean, dry cloth.
Do not apply creams, ointments, sprays or other home remedies.
Get medical help right away by calling 911 or the fire department.

Know what to do if someone is bleeding.

If someone is bleeding, have the person lie down.
Call 911. Open or remove clothing over the wound.
Cover with a clean cloth and apply pressure by pushing down with hands.
Keep pressure until medical help arrives.

Know what to do if someone is unresponsive.

If you see someone who is not breathing or doesn’t have a pulse, call 911.
Clasp hands.
Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until medical personnel arrive.
